M-A girls lacrosse takes down Palo Alto

March 20, 2017

The Menlo-Atherton girls lacrosse team won at Palo Alto on Saturday, 11-4. It was the Bears' first victory over the Vikings since 2009.

Palo Alto scored first on an Ellen Goncher goal two minutes in. However, the Bears defense stiffened and Grace Carlson got two of her four caused turnovers, keying three straight M-A goals from Annie Payne, Grace Tully and Hannah Shaw. The Vikings' Charlotte Cheng scored, but M-A started to dominate the midfield on strong work from Kelly Woods and Bea Geaghan-Breiner, who won six ground balls in the game.

The Bears got two goals from Emma Easton and another from Shaw to finish the half up 6-2. In the second half, the Vikings kept the Bears off the board for 12 minutes while scoring a pair of free position goals from Cheng and Abby Ramsey. The final 12 minutes were all Bears as Tully, Easton and Payne combined for five straight goals to put the game away.
