Big sixth inning powers San Benito past Los Gatos

April 18, 2017

Six runs in the top of the sixth inning lifted San Benito to a big 9-5 non-league win over Los Gatos on Monday afternoon.

Trailing 4-2 entering the sixth inning, Mason Marquez led things off for the Balers with a single and Tyler Triano followed with a walk. Alex Soto's bunt then resulted in an error, with Marquez scoring to cut the lead to one run.

Two batters later, Zach Livingston's bunt back to the mound scored Triano, tying the game with two outs. Davonte Butler then singled to left field, scoring Soto with the go-ahead run. Diego Fisher was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out, and Drew Williams walked to score another run. The final blow of the inning occurred when Josh Harris' ground ball to second was misplayed, resulting in another two runs crossing the plate, and a 8-4 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Marquez and Livingston each had two hits in the game for San Benito, while Jared Mazzaferro had a pair of hits for the Wildcats. The big sixth inning spoiled what had been a quality start for Los Gatos' Cole Patterson, who gave up five hits and one earned run in five innings on the mound.

Butler picked up the win on the mound for the Balers, with one and one-third innings pitched, while Triano slammed the door in the bottom of the seventh, needing just six pitches to register a pair of strikeouts and end the game.
