SAN JOSE - St. Ignatius had eight hits in its game against Moreau Catholic to open the Cunningham Easter Classic at Bellarmine, but none were as important as Marvcus Guarin's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the Wildcats to the 2-1 victory.
St. Ignatius took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Stephen Bird drove in the go-ahead run, but the Mariners tied things again in the top of the sixth inning, on Alex Pham's run-scoring hit.
Dominic Tognotti picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four.
Moreau Catholic bounced back later in the day with a 3-2 win over Lincoln-Stockton, on a ninth inning walk-off hit by sophomore Jacob George. Junior David Tellez had three hits in the game for Moreau, including a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
St. Ignatius faces Lincoln on Thursday afternoon.
