Overfelt held off a late rally by Menlo to win a 5-3 decision on Monday in a non-league boys soccer game Monday afternoon.
Senior Rodolfo Pedroza opened the scoring for the Royals (3-0-1) midway through the first half on a penalty kick and later added three assists. Junior left back Andy Barajas put Overfelt up 2-0 when he stole the ball from a Menlo defender and rifled a shot into the upper right corner. Senior Paulino Lazaro added the first of his two goals and senior Gabriel Perez scored with a powerful right-footed shot off a nice assist from Barajas as the Royals built a 4-0 lead early in the second half.
However, Menlo peeled off three unanswered goals. In the 54th minute, Menlo junior Jonny Ebrahmian got his first goal of the season on a pass from senior Marc-Velten Lomelin. Junior captain Ben Lasky scored on a feed from sophomore Trevor Perez in the 65th minute.
The Knights closed the gap to 4-3 five minutes later when Lasky fed sophomore Andres Simbeck. Overfelt, however, scored off a corner in the 75th for the final.
Menlo next plays at noon Dec. 29 at Scotts Valley, while Overfelt takes on San Benito Friday at 3:15pm.
