MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - An 81st minute game-winner from Nicole Bumgarner was the difference as Mountain View stayed unbeaten this season with a 2-1 non-league win over Leigh, who suffered its first loss this year.
The Spartans got second-half goals from Bumgarner and senior Lucy Tang, and it was just enough to hold off the Longhorns, who were coming off a hard-earned draw against St. Francis earlier in the week.
Senior Brittany Cooksey scored Leigh's lone goal in the second half, assisted by senior Avery Cannella.
Leigh fell to 2-1-1, after starting the win with identical 7-0 blowout victories against Overfelt and James Lick.
Mountain View faces St. Francis on Saturday, in the Fremont Firebird Classic championship game, after improving to 7-0 overall with the win over the Longhorns. The Spartans beat Menlo and St. Ignatius in earlier games for the Firebird Classic, which spreads out over two weeks.
