St. Ignatius repeats as Open champs

March 3, 2018

The St. Ignatius boys soccer team repeated as CCS Open Division champs Friday night with a 2-1 win over Burlingame at Buck Shaw Stadium on the campus of Santa Clara University.

All of the scoring took place in the first half with senior David Woodruff netting the eventual match winner with a 30-yard strike just before halftime.

"I just kind of held off the defender and then sort of closed my eyes, hit it as hard as I could and hoped for the best," Woodruff told the Bay Area News Group.

It was the second consecutive championship in a row for the Wildcats (17-1-5), who also got a goal from senior midfielder Alex Bailey in the 17th minute. Kol Van Giesen scored for Burlingame (14-4-4), which nearly tied the match in the final minutes.

Both teams - along with Open semifinalists Alisal and Los Gatos - will participate in the NorCal playoffs beginning next week. The other CCS representatives will be determined Saturday when the championships of Division 1 and Division 2 are decided at Valley Christian High. Mt. Pleasant takes on Sacred Heart Cathedral in Division 2 while WCAL rivals Bellarmine and St. Francis meet for the Division 1 title.
