LAS VEGAS - De La Salle started fast, scoring three times in the top of the first inning, as the Spartans rolled past St. Laurence-Burbank (IL) 8-2 in the opening game of the All-Catholic Classic at Bishop Gorman-Las Vegas.
It was junior Kyle Harrison who struck the early blow for the Spartans, delivering a three-run home run in the top of the first after Chris Santiago had walked and Jared Amigh had singled, each with two outs. Harrison then drove a 1-0 pitch to left to clear the bases and give starting pitcher Eric Reyzelman an early cushion.
De La Salle increased its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning, when Santiago singled with runners on first and second, but the left fielder for St. Laurence misplayed the ball, allowing Nick Fusari and Blake Burke to both score on the play.
Reyzelman earned the win for the Spartans, going four and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. Dylan White allowed just one hit and struck out two in relief.
Harrison, Amigh, Fusari, Santiago and Vince Bianchina each had two hits in the game, including an RBI double for Amigh.
De La Salle faces Marian Catholic-Chicago Heights on Tuesday morning.
