NOVATO, Calif. - Redwood amped up the energy in Saturday’s match up against San Marin to get the big 28-14 win in a competitive game, the first win for the Giants in the series over the past decade.
This exciting MCAL league matchup was one that many people said could determine the league champion with both teams sitting at 4-1 before the game.
Redwood’s offense turned it on in Saturday’s game with many plays that answered each San Marin score. Redwood started the game off down 7-0 after a long run by Dante DiMare on the first play from scrimmage and a short scoring run that followed immediately back, but the Giants fired back with a touchdown run by Joe Calzaretta. Redwood then took the lead on a 42-yard touchdown reception by Zach Ginsburg.
Ginsburg also ended up scoring another amazing touchdown near the end of the first half, on a 92-yard kick return after San Marin had tied the game at 14 on DiMare's second scoring run of the game.
San Marin attempted to comeback in the second half with long drives, but were stopped by the Giants’ defense led by linebacker Henry Minturn. Minturn brought the pressure against the Mustang offensive line and had multiple sacks. The Giants shut the San Marin offense down in the second half with a fumble recovery in the third quarter and an incredible interception from a tipped pass by Calzaretta that was also in the third. The Mustangs had the ball for most of the fourth, but couldn’t get anything going because of the strong Giants’ defense.
“We had a good week of practice, came in and got the job done and kept the energy high," said Redwood coach Allen Talley.
The Mustang defense contributed as well with an interception in the third quarter by DiMare and had some tipped passes and sacks, but still couldn’t contain the persistent Redwood offense.
“We have to get better every week and prepare ourselves for tough match ups like these,” said San Marin coach Dominic DiMare.
Redwood finished off the game in the fourth quarter with great defense and a touchdown by running back Luke Mckernan to seal the victory at 28-14.
San Marin (4-2) is hoping to bounce back next week in a tough home match up against Marin Catholic, while Redwood (5-1), aims to keep the energy high at Novato.
