Five pitchers combined on a one-hitter and Sequoia pounded out 14 hits en route to a 13-0 win over visiting Marshall in a non-league baseball game Friday afternoon. With the win, the Cherokees improved to 2-5 while Marshall dropped to 0-6.
Junior Zane Gelphman (1-0) combined with four relievers to shut down the Phoenix. Gelphman worked the first four innings in hitless fashion, striking out six. At the plate, he went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Senior Eli Dugan also went 3-for-4 and knocked in three runs as Sequoia put the game away with a 10-run third inning. Dugan and Gelphman accounted for two hits apiece in the big inning, as the Cherokees nearly batted around twice.
Sequoia followed up the decisive win with an 8-2 loss at Half Moon Bay in its final tuneup before league play starts March 19 at Westmoor. Marshall's next game is Wednesday March 20 at Lowell.
