Senior lefty Sean Varenkamp threw a complete-game, five-hit shutout as Scotts Valley defeated host Harbor, 9-0, in a Santa Cruz County Athletic League baseball game Tuesday March 26.
Varenkamp (4-2) struck out five and walked only one to lower his ERA to 0.47. The game was tied 0-0 heading into the sixth inning when the Falcons scored three runs to jump ahead 3-0. Scotts Valley added six runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Junior Joe Gillette was the hitting star for the Falcons, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Senior Garrett Johnston and sophomore Jake Lobo added two hits apiece for Scotts Valley, which followed up the win over Harbor with a victory over Aloha (Beaverton, Ore.) and a loss to St. Francis CCC to move to 9-4 on the season.
Harbor is now 5-10 after dropping a 4-0 decision at Bellarmine to open the Cunningham Easter Classic Tuesday. The Pirates continue the tournament with a game against College Park (Pleasant Hill) Wednesday. Scotts Valley continues play in the Righetti Classic in Santa Maria.
