Sequoia erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning to rally for an 11-2 win over visiting Woodside in Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division baseball action Tuesday afternoon. The two teams played again Thursday, with the Wildcats (5-11, 2-2 PAL-Ocean) bouncing back for a 2-1 win over the Cherokees (7-8-1, 3-1).
After spotting Woodside an early 2-0 lead, Sequoia roared back with single runs in the second and third innings to tie the score 2-2. The Cherokees then blew up for nine runs in the third to take an 11-2 lead as senior Tyler Leary (1-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) and junior Zane Gelphman (3-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) led the balanced hitting attack.
Junior Spencer Smith (2-1) came on for injured starter Cameron Greenough in the first inning and went the rest of the way to pick up the victory. Smith allowed just four hits and no runs, striking out six with no walks.
Woodside salvaged a split with Sequoia on Thursday as freshman Jamie Kruger tossed a one-hitter. The Wildcats next host Jefferson Tuesday afternoon (3:30 pm) as league play resumes. Sequoia hosts South San Francisco Tuesday afternoon (4 pm).
