Woodside erupted for eight runs in the third inning to coast to a shortened 18-0 win over host San Mateo in a Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division softball game Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Wildcats (14-1, 3-0 PAL-Ocean) remained undefeated and in sole possession of first place in the division, while the Bearcats (4-4, 3-1) dropped a half-game out of first place.
Leading just 3-0 heading into the top of the third, Woodside batted around for eight runs to take an 11-0 lead. Junior Madison Diamos capped the rally with a three-run inside-the-park home run. She finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four runs batted in.
Diamos knocked in Woodside's first run in the top of the first inning with a double to score Keshaila Chang (2-for-2, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs). The Wildcats extended the lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI double by freshman Lexi Riccardi (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) to score Sophia Fanucchi. Sophomore Kelly James (1-for-3, 3 RBIs) followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
The game was shortened to four innings when Woodside added seven runs in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 18-0. Junior Christina Patton (9-4) picked up the win with four outstanding innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.
