Schuring stymies Mitty bats in St. Francis victory

April 4, 2017

SAN JOSE - St. Francis pitcher Jordan Schuring held Mitty scoreless on just four hits, as the Lancers earned a key WCAL softball victory on Tuesday afternoon, 1-0.

Schuring struck out just two in the game, but scattered the four hits, never allowing more than one hit in an inning. Meanwhile, St. Francis (13-5, 4-1 WCAL) got what it needed offensively in the top of the sixth inning. Andrea Delfino led off the inning with a double to left field, and advanced to third with one out on Claudia Costello's infield single.

One batter later, with the bases loaded, Hannah Demore singled up the middle, scoring Delfino with the game-winning run. Mitty pitcher Savanna Smith retired the next two hitters to limit the threat, but the lone run was all Schuring would need.

Costello was the lone player in the game with two hits, while Smith also pitched admirably for the Monarchs (12-3, 4-1), allowing one run on five hits while striking out four.

Mitty opens the Livermore Stampede on Thursday against Castro Valley and St. Mary's-Stockton. St. Francis plays at St. Ignatius on Thursday.
