GILROY, CA - Freshman pitcher Abby Clark was outstanding for Gilroy on Tuesday afternoon, allowing just three hits and no earned runs in the Mustangs' 3-1 win over Aptos.
Aptos scored its only run in the top of the first, but Gilroy responded with lone runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Makenna Weiler paced the Mustangs' offense with three hits and all three runs scored.
A bases loaded error gave the Mariners a run to open the game, but Gilroy responded by loading the bases in the bottom half of the first, and Annabelle Gutierrez' ground ball to second base brought in Weiler, who had singled in her first at-bat.
Weiler singled again to lead off the third, and after two outs were recorded, Christina Chavez doubled to score the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the fifth, Weiler singled with one out, and scored on Clark's double to left, completing the scoring.
The three runs were plenty for Clark, who retired 11 straight batters at one point.
Gilroy hosts Monterey on Thursday, while Aptos hosts Harbor on the same afternoon.
