MONTEREY, CA - A blistering first quarter set the tone for Mills on Tuesday, as the Vikings blitzed Salinas, 56-37, to start the Monterey Bay Sweet 16 Tournament.
Mills jumped out to a 13-1 lead after one quarter, and built a 32-8 lead by halftime before cruising in the final two quarters. Sophomore Chloe Tam finished as the leading scorer for the Vikings, with 11 points, while junior Kaela Stonebarger was the only other Mills player in double figures, with 10 points.
The Vikings also dominated on the glass, led by junior Debbie Zshornack and freshman Victoria Williams, who each had 11 rebounds. Stonebarger also had five steals to lead a high pressure defense in the first half.
Mills faces Mission Prep-San Luis Obispo in Wednesday's quarterfinal round. The Royals beat Scotts Valley in the first round on Tuesday.
