SAN JOSE - The top girls basketball team in the nation, Archbishop Mitty, stayed unbeaten with an 86-49 win over St. Francis on Wednesday night, behind a 27-point effort from senior Karisma Ortiz.
Ortiz was one of two Monarchs to post a double-double, as she added 12 rebounds and hit 11-of-14 shots from the field, including both her three-point attempts. Junior Haley Jones continued her consistent play, contributing 20 points and 12 rebounds, while junior Ania McNicholas rounded out the top scorers with 16 points.
Mitty (18-0, 4-0 WCAL) led by 17 after one quarter, 27-10, but CCS No. 7 St. Francis (12-5, 1-3) battled to keep the game within striking distance in the second quarter, and went to the locker room trailing 47-26 at the half. Junior Paige Uyehara led the Lancers with 20 points, including five three-pointers, while senior Lydia Foust and junior Mia Grizelj had 10 points each for the night.
The Monarchs pulled away for good in the third quarter, however, outscoring St. Francis 20-4 during those eight minutes to cruise to the victory.
Mitty is back in action next Wednesday, when it travels to Valley Christian, while St. Francis hosts NCS No. 5 St. Joseph Notre Dame this Saturday.
