There has been no doubt that the Mitty girls soccer team has been one of the strongest programs in the Bay Area for years. But it wasn't until Friday night when the Monarchs were able to capture the most prestigious of titles in the Central Coast Section: Open Division champions.
Mitty (20-1-2) scored a goal in the 33rd minute and it held up for a 1-0 win over Mountain View (21-2-0) in a battle of the clear top two teams in CCS. Sophomore Sven Neunfinger scored for the second match in a row, picking up a loose ball and firing in a shot from 20 yards out into the upper left corner.
"I'm not really sure what happened," Neunfinger told the Bay Area News Group. "I just ended up with the ball and I didn't even look - I just shot it."
Both teams - along with Open semifinalists Palo Alto and Sobrato - will participate in the NorCal playoffs next week along with the champions of Division 1 and Division 2, which will be determined Saturday. In Saturday's finals at Valley Christian High School, Sacred Heart Cathedral takes on Terra Nova in Division 2 and St. Francis meets Woodside in Division 1.
