Mitty opens with hard-fought win over Branham

December 6, 2018

SAN JOSE - Senior Mica Sinko had a goal and an assist to lift visiting Archbishop Mitty to a 2-0 win over Branham in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Sinko got the Monarchs on the board in the ninth minute on a penalty kick sequence. Branham goalkeeper Tanner Lanphear saved the initial penalty from Sinko, but the rebound went right to the Mitty striker, who slotted it in for a 1-0 lead.

Branham had several chances to equalize but goalkeeper Angel Rojero made three stops against Branham forward Joel Silva from inside the penalty area.

Mitty doubled its lead in the 69th minute. Sinko received a throw-in from the left sideline and laid the ball off to junior Beckett Roskkoski, who nailed a shot into the upper right corner to make it 2-0.

Rojero finished with four saves in posting the shutout. For the match, Mitty out-shot Branham 9-6, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Lanphear was credited with six saves.

The Bruins continue their non-league season Saturday at Mountain View (11 am). The Monarchs travel to Leland Friday night (7 pm).
