Monte Vista hands Amador Valley first loss

January 24, 2020

In a big match between two previously unbeaten teams, and the top two teams in our Prep2Prep North Coast Section rankings, it was all Monte Vista on Thursday evening as the Mustangs handled Amador Valley, 3-0.

Both East Bay Athletic League powers entered the night unbeaten overall and vying for the top spot in the league standings. Amador Valley had not even allowed a goal since a dominating 4-1 victory over perennial power Liberty back on Jan. 11, but the Dons' defense had trouble containing the skill of the Monte Vista offense, especially Stanford-bound senior Julia Leontini. Leontini recorded a brace, giving her seven goals scored so far this month, though she is hardly the only weapon for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Charlyse Berry is just the latest player to emerge for the powerhouse program in Danville, and she had both a goal and an assist in the win over Amador Valley on Thursday, on the heels of her two-goal, two-assist performance earlier in the week against Granada. Senior standout and UCLA commit Megan Edelman added an assist during Thursday's win, having notched her own brace last week in a win over Foothill.

Amador Valley was able to get shots on goal during Thursday's loss to the Mustangs, but was turned away each time by the Mustangs' two outstanding keepers, senior Jules Girdner and junior Emma Rodgers, who each recorded five saves.

Monte Vista improved to 11-0-1 overall with the win, 7-0 in the EBAL, and will host Dublin on Tuesday night. Amador Valley fell to 9-1-1 overall, 5-1-1 in the EBAL, and will head to Dougherty Valley on Tuesday.
