The 12th-seeded Gilroy softball team traveled up to Sobrato to take on the fifth-seeded Bulldogs and came away with a 9-4 victory Wednesday afternoon in a first-round CCS Division II matchup. The win pushes the Mustangs (13-13) into a quarterfinal matchup Saturday against Los Altos, a 5-0 winner over Willow Glen.
Gilroy raced out to an early 4-0 lead, but the host Bulldogs rallied to cut the lead to 5-4 with a fifth-inning rally. However, the Mustangs were able to preserve the lead and then scored four late runs to win comfortably in the end.
The loss ended a terrific season for Sobrato (17-6), which won the BVAL-Santa Teresa regular-season championship with a 12-2 record.
