Junior running back James McDaniel rushed for 114 yards and three touchdowns as Woodside Priory knocked off host Pinewood, 46-24, Thursday night in the inaugural Panther Bowl, so named because both teams' mascot is the panther. Woodside Priory improved to 4-0, 2-0 in MTAL 8-Man play, while Pinewood fell to 1-1, 0-1.
Defensive back Will Latta had three interceptions for Woodside Priory, including one that he returned for a touchdown to give the Panthers a 12-8 lead late in the first quarter. Pinewood, which got touchdowns from junior Gregory Naumann and freshman Aidan Lucero, took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter only to see Woodside Priory strike back with the next 20 points. Woodside Priory outscored Pinewood 28-6 in the decisive second quarter and took a 40-16 lead into halftime.
Pinewood continues league play when it travels to San Juan Bautista to take on Anzar Friday night (6 pm) while Woodside Priory looks to remain unbeaten Friday afternoon (3 pm) when it hosts Trinity Christian (Monterey).
