The St. Francis defense completely shut down visiting Overfelt in a 42-0 win Friday night in the first round of the CCS Division II playoffs. The top-seeded Lancers (6-5) advance to the semifinals and will face No. 5 Aragon. The Royals (6-5), who reached the CCS playoffs for the first time since 1998, see their season end with the loss.
Overfelt managed just eight yards of total offense against the best scoring defense in the WCAL, as the Royals never threatened the St. Francis end zone. Alex Andrighetto and Austin Guibor scored two touchdowns apiece in the first half to give the Lancers a 28-0 lead at the break.
Quarterback Mike Lauck, who played just the first half, completed 7-of-16 passes for 168 yards and a 24-yard touchdown pass to Guibor. A nine-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Eddie Wadors extended the Lancer lead to 35-0 in the third quarter, and Devin Hurtado concluded the scoring with an 11-yard run late in the third quarter.
Andrighetto scored on runs of two and four yards as St. Francis was able to drive at will in the first half. Guibor had a one-yard dive in the first quarter to give St. Francis a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Although the Lancers finished tied for fourth in the hypercompetitive WCAL, they are considered the clear favorites to capture the Division II title. St. Francis will play for a spot in the title game next weekend against an Aragon team that defeated Leland 35-21 behind a balanced offensive attack and a suffocating defense.
