Southern California gets three first-day picks in MLB Draft

June 11, 2016

La Costa Canyon High School outfielder Mickey Moniak became the first prep outfielder to be selected No. 1 since Tampa Bay drafted Delmon Young in 2003.

Moniak was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the top pick.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound outfielder led La Costa Canyon with a .478 batting average, 47 RBI, 40 runs and seven home runs.

Moniak, who committed to UCLA, was one of three Bruin signees to be picked on the first day of the draft.

Chaminade outfielder Blake Rutherford was taken No. 18 by the New York Yankees.

Santa Barbara High pitcher Kevin Gowdy was selected No. 42 in the second round by the Philadelphia Phillies.

All three players probably won’t be playing in Westwood.

Damien High pitcher Nick Lodolo was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 41st pick.
