Oakland leaves Lancer baseball, takes over softball

June 18, 2016

Mike Oakland is switching sports, vacating his position as the St. Francis High baseball coach to become the St. Francis softball coach, according to a media release from the school.

Oakland’s teams have won three section titles, including the last two, and have won at least a share of six consecutive WCAL titles.

"I've been coaching baseball for 20 years and I'm a little burned out," Oakland said by text. "I like the idea of a new challenge and I have three daughters that all play softball so I would like the opportunity to coach them in high school if they continue to play."

During Oakland’s time as baseball coach he has been named the San Jose Mercury coach of the year and the coach of the year by the California Coaches’ Association.

"We are very happy to have Mike Oakland take over the softball program here at St. Francis High School,” said athletic director Michael Pilawski. “As a teacher at St. Francis, coach Oakland clearly knows what it means to be a student-athlete here and he knows how to build a successful program. His leadership and passion with our baseball program over the past 10 years has been outstanding and we are looking forward to that same style of direction with our softball program."

Oakland replaces Paula Martinez who resigned following the season.
