October 12, 2016

No. 1 Mater Dei vs. No. 6 Orange Lutheran

The Monarchs will look to continue their dominant 2016 campaign with another big matchup against fellow Prep2Prep Top 25 member Orange Lutheran, which is fresh off a thrilling, overtime win over JSerra Catholic. Mater Dei has allowed just 35 total points in its six wins, outscoring opponents by 305 points in those contests. Led by sophomore quarterback J.T. Daniels, the Monarchs’ air attack is devastating. Daniels has completed 80.4 percent of his passes for 2,234 yards and a 35 to 2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Junior wide receiver Amon-ra St. Brown has been Daniels’ most lucrative target, scoring 13 touchdowns and gaining 551 yards receiving on 28 receptions. Orange Lutheran has its own standout sophomore quarterback in Ryan Hilinski, who has completed 70 of 133 passes for 1,078 yards and an 8 to 4 TD-to-INT ratio. The Lancers will need plenty of offense to keep pace with the top-ranked Monarchs.

No. 16 Gardena Serra vs. No. 23 Bishop Amat

The Cavaliers from Gardena Serra have strung together four wins after starting the season 0-3 after a brutal opening slate. Senior quarterback Jalani Eason powers the Cavaliers’ offense, gaining 674 yards on the ground with five touchdowns, and completing 56.6 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Amat has won two straight, including a 38-17 win over Crespi last week. Sophomore quarterback Blake Archuleta leads a balanced offense, completing 75 of 114 passes for 852 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Dominic Barrera is the heart of the Lancers’ running game, gaining 512 yards and scoring four times on 110 carries.

No. 21 Santa Margarita at No. 2 St. John Bosco

Bosco has bounced back from a loss to national power Las Vegas Bishop Gorman to win three straight in blowout fashion. Dual-threat quarterback Re-al Mitchell is the soul of the Braves’ offense, completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,072 yards and 11 touchdowns and adding another 388 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. Santa Margarita brings a two-headed rushing attack in junior running back Chad Magyar (71 rushes, 467 yards, six touchdowns) and senior tailback William Green (56 carries, 381 yards, four touchdowns). Junior quarterback Richard Wagner’s favorite target has been senior Grant Calcaterra, who has 32 catches for 490 yards and five touchdowns in five games.

No. 9 JSerra Catholic at No. 11 Servite

Serra aims to bounce back from a heartbreaking, overtime loss to Orange Lutheran in Week 7 in a contest against Servite, which is also attempting to rebound from a blowout loss to St. John Bosco. Junior quarterback Matthew Robinson is a weapon through the air and on the ground, completing 75 of 126 passes for 948 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, and running for 224 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries. Senior receiver Riley O’Brien is the Lions’ top receiving target, catching 24 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Servite quarterback Tyler Lytle leads the passing game, throwing for 1,290 yards on 95-of-165 passing for five touchdowns and a blemish-free zero interceptions. He spreads the ball around between three main wideouts: junior Deion Hurt (29 receptions, 434 yards, one touchdown), sophomore Kyle Ford (22 catches, 390 yards, two touchdowns) and Dominic Winfield (22 receptions, 272 yards, one touchdown).
