No. 11 Servite 38, No. 9 JSerra Catholic 14

A week after the Friars were brought back to earth by a blowout defeat, Servite pounded Trinity League opponent JSerra Catholic. Quarterback Tyler Lytle completed 21 of 33 passes for 307 yards as the Friars overcame an early 7-0 deficit to score 24 unanswered points. Deion Hurt scored twice on 17-yard and 37-yard receptions, and added a 14-yard touchdown run to power the Servite offense. The Friars don’t get a break, as they move on to face Orange Lutheran, which is coming off a blowout loss to Mater Dei.

No. 16 Gardena Serra 28, No. 23 Bishop Amat 12

Serra rebounded from a scoreless first half to put up 28 points and run away with a win over Bishop Amat. The Cavaliers grabbed the lead on three third-quarter scores. Randy Anyanwu rushed for a 46-yard touchdown, quarterback Jalani Eason shook off four sacks to complete a 27-yard touchdown pass to Max Williams, and ran one more in from 10 yards out. A passionate game turned in favor of Serra in the second half thanks to a defensive stand from Serra, which held Amat to six points while getting to quarterback Jacob Amaro, who finished 19-of-31 passing for 180 yards but was kept out of the end zone.

No. 17 Norco 36, King 35

Friday night’s game was junior running back Travis Dye’s to own. Dye rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Quarterback Nick Lasher completed 19 of 32 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, spreading his completions among six receivers. King quarterback Bradley Kleven did his best to keep pace, tossing an eye-popping 57 pass attempts but completing just 28 for 382 yards and three touchdowns, but two crucial interceptions. Junior receiver Chris Venable caught six passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolves, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars escaped with a one-point victory.

No. 1 Mater Dei 56, No. 6 Orange Lutheran 14

How big is the gap between Mater Dei and everyone else? Well, we know the gap between No. 1 and what was No. 6: 42 points. After playing a fairly tight first half, the Monarchs locked down on defense, shutting out Orange Lutheran in the second half while tacking on 29 more points to exit with a 56-14 win. Sophomore quarterback JT Daniels was superb again, completing 30 of 36 passes for 406 yards and five touchdowns for a near-perfect quarterback rating of 158.1. Senior receiver Osiris St. Brown caught 11 of Daniels’ passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Mater Dei held Orange Lutheran quarterback Ryan Hilinski to a completion percentage of 47.1 and 190 yards through the air, shutting down an Orange Lutheran offense that had scored 114 points in its previous three games. The Monarchs reign supreme atop the Southern Section after eight weeks.
