Southern Section playoff semifinals highlights

November 27, 2016

Division 1: St. John Bosco 49, Corona Centennial 47

In Centennial, Bosco faced its toughest opponent since losing to rival Mater Dei in the regular season. The Huskies brought a high-powered offense to the contest, and did not disappoint. Running back Miles reed rushed for 231 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries, while quarterback Tanner McKee completed 15 of 22 passes for 232 yards and three scores, including six connections with senior receiver Justin Fisher for 111 yards and two touchdowns. But the offensive fireworks weren’t quite enough to keep up with the Braves. Quarterback Re-al Mitchell completed 18 of 23 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns, and added 116 yards rushing and another score on 14 carries. Teamed with Mitchell, running back Terrence Beasley rushed 17 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns, while two Bosco receivers — Terrell Bynum and Berkeley Holman — combined for 238 yards receiving and two scores as Bosco edged Centennial to earn a trip to the Division 1 finals and a rematch with Mater Dei, which defeated Rancho Cucamonga in the other semifinal.

Division 3: Edison 32, Rancho Verde 28

A potent air attack helped power the Chargers past the Mustangs and into the Division 3 final on Friday. Quarterback Griffin O’Connor completed 20 of 31 passes for 295 yards and a touchdown, connecting with two different Chargers receivers for 100-plus yards each. Defensive back Brandon Moradian was all over the field on defense, registering 16 tackles as the Edison defense did just enough to come away with a win. Senior running back Marlon Moorer rushed for 144 yards and two scores on 29 carries, but it wasn’t enough, as Edison’s two scores in the fourth proved to be the difference.

Division 6: Los Altos 30, Woodrow Wilson 28

It came down to the final play, but Los Altos emerged victorious over Woodrow Wilson in a thriller. Quarterback Kody Olmos found Khayman King on an 18-yard touchdown pass as time expired to lift Los Altos to the win, preserving their unblemished mark and earning them a date with Paraclete in the Division 6 final. Running back Tyler Nevens added 202 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries, while running back Jacobi Hardy rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort.

Division 10: Aquinas 67, Leuzinger 66

Another thriller in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs required overtime to determine its winner, and it came in stunning fashion. Aquinas scored on its final possession in regulation to force the extra period, and stood tall on a two-point conversion attempt by Leuzinger, denying the attempt before scoring on the ensuing possession and making the point-after attempt to send it to the Division 10 final. A blocked field goal preserved the tie to send it to overtime, a possession after quarterback Salieu Ceesay found Joshka Gustav on an 11-yard touchdown pass to knot the game up at 57-57. Ceesay finished 17-of-30 passing for 249 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed for 35 yards and two additional scores to power an Aquinas offense that did enough to win the semifinal and will face St. Anthony in the final.
