After spending the past six seasons as a competitive anomaly within the North Coast Section, referred to as a 'freelance' team, James Logan has officially rejoined the Mission Valley Athletic League for football and will play a full league schedule once again in the 2018 season.
The Colts last played in the MVAL for the 2011 season, when they completed their third straight unbeaten season in league play. The only close game for Logan in league play that season was the regular season finale against Washington, won 17-8 by the Colts. The lack of competition within the league led Logan to seek competitive anomaly status, so it could schedule better opponents and prepare for the post-season.
The 2016 season, however, saw decreasing numbers for Logan, and a 2-8 overall record. The Colts were not able to rejoin the MVAL after that season, due to its two-year agreement with the league, but when that agreement expired after this past season, the coaches in the league voted to allow Logan back in as a full-fledged member once again.
Under second-year head coach Zac McNally, Logan made numerous strides again in the 2017 season, finishing 5-4 in the regular season before falling to Foothill in the first round of the NCS Division I playoffs. The roster also expanded once again, to 54 players this fall.
The move back into the MVAL also seems logical from a competitive standpoint. The Colts still struggled against top Division I competition in 2017, falling by large margins to California, Freedom, San Leandro, and Foothill. Logan thrived against Mission Valley teams, however, going 4-0 against teams from the league, including a 41-2 win over league champion Moreau Catholic.
