Two big innings was plenty for Carlmont as the Scots routed a former Bay PAL-Bay rival this Tuesday with a 14-0 win over Sequoia.
Logan Snow and Nick Rogers combined for the shutout, with Snow scattering three hits over the first four innings. The two hurlers had plenty of run support early in the game, as Carlmont put up a pair of seven-run outbursts in each of the first two innings. The highlight of the first inning was catcher Daniel Friis’ grand slam over the left field fence.
The second inning explosion was highlighted by doubles from Ryan Busser, JP Avila and David Bedrosian. Busser and Bedrosian each had two hits for the Scots, while Jack Vanoncini added a double in the fifth inning.
With the win, Carlmont improved its record to 5-3 overall, and remains 1-1 in PAL-Bay action after having split an opening series with The King’s Academy, who is up from the Ocean Division this year.
Los Altos stays hot with win over Los Gatos
Los Altos used the Parker Brothers to maximum effect on Wednesday, as the siblings each hit three-run home runs and Zach Fuchs smashed a double to put the game away as the Eagles won the opening game of the season series with Los Gatos at home, 9-1. It was the first win for Los Altos against the Wildcats in over eight years, according to Eagles’ coach Gabe Stewart.
After the Wildcats turned a walk, stolen base, wild pitch and a fielder’s choice into a 1-0 lead, Los Altos struck back in the bottom of the first. Aidan Brenner singled to lead off the inning. Ryan Baum hit a single and both players moved up on a wild pitch. Aaron Parker worked the count to 3-2 and then blasted the sixth pitch over the left field fence for a 3-1 lead.
In the second inning the Eagles staged a two-out rally when Brenner doubled and Baum singled him home for a 4-1 lead. Aaron Parker reached safely on an error at third and older brother Ben stepped up and hit a 2-0 fastball over the left field fence for a 7-1 lead. The Eagles would add insurance in the fifth inning when Conner Kendall singled and Brock Susko reached on an error at shortstop. On a 1-1 count with the runners moving Fuchs smashed an opposite field double into left center to score both runners and put the game out of reach 9-1.
“Everything went right for us,” Stewart said. “I am sure Los Gatos will be primed to play its best game on Friday because (coach) Nate Anderson is an excellent motivator and strategist. We need every run we can get against them because they are an excellent program.”
Connor Altinger threw 5 1/3 innings, striking out three, while Ethan Ienni threw 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Lonardo carries Leigh past Santa Cruz
Gioncarlo Lonardo was brilliant for Leigh on Thursday afternoon, striking out 10 and allowing just two hits as the Longhorns blanked Santa Cruz, 3-0.
Leigh’s lineup only managed three hits for the game, but two of them were extra-baggers in the top of the fourth. Nathan Schwartz doubled with one out and Mitchell Dowd followed with a walk. E Cooper then doubled to score Schwartz, and Dowd scored one batter later on S Fernald’s sacrifice fly to right field for a two-run lead. An error on O Bower’s ground ball to third base then allowed Cooper to score the final of the inning and the game.
Six-spot lifts Palo Alto
Josh Kasevich scattered five hits over six innings on Wednesday, meaning that a six-run sixth inning was plenty for the Vikings, who defeated Homestead, 8-1.
Palo Alto led 2-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning, when a one-out single by M Caren was followed by a line drive double from Aidan Berger to put both runners in scoring position. R Amsbaugh followed with another double to clear the bases and make it a four-run lead. Kasevich later provided the final blow of the rally with another run-scoring double.
Ben Estrada pitched a hitless seventh inning for Palo Alto. Sean Cheng took the loss for Homestead, despite a solid outing. Cheng threw the first four innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out five.
Errors cost SHP in loss to Burlingame
Five errors were costly for Sacred Heart Prep, as the Gators fell to Burlingame on Wednesday, 11-4.
Emilio Flores went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs for the Panthers, who scored nine runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings. Jordi Aguilar, Alex McMaster and Keunho Kim each had two hits for Burlingame, while Noah Larkin picked up the win on the mound after throwing the first four innings.
