CCS baseball: Carlmont, Menlo, Los Altos win thrillers, and more

March 30, 2019

BELMONT - Jason Korjeff secured his fourth win on the mound this season with a 108-pitch complete game, as Carlmont outlasted Hillsdale, 3-2.

Korjeff persevered through the Scots' uncharacteristic five fielding errors, picking up his teammates by scattering four hits and not allowing a hit after the fourth inning. Both Hillsdale runs in the second inning were unearned, and he struck out five.

Carlmont scored first in the bottom of the first when Logan Snow singled in David Bedrosian. Two more runs came in the bottom of the second. Jake Robinson led off and reached base on error, and Daniel Friis followed with a solid single to move up Robinson. Jasper Loo then took the first pitch he saw and doubled to left-center to drive in Robinson, sending courtesy runner J.P. Avila to third. Bedrosian's groundout to second brought in Avila with the final and eventual winning run.

Hillsdale did their best to tie the score in the top of the seventh. With a runner at third and only one out, Robinson caught a fly ball in medium right field and his throw home was right on the money to complete the double play and end the game.

Menlo rallies past King's Academy

Single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings allowed Menlo to down The King's Academy, 6-5, in a key PAL game on Friday.

A single to right off the bat of Justin Nam in the top of the sixth inning put Menlo ahead by a single run, and the Knights tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, one that would prove to be much-needed. A one-out single by Luca Espinosa scored Charlie Giesler to make the score 6-4 in the top of the seventh. TKA cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh, when Caleb Charonnat's ground ball scored Garrett Plata, but that was all they could get.

Nam had a big three-hit, two-RBI day for Menlo.

Los Altos goes extras to beat Cupertino

Ryan Baum tossed an impressive nine-inning complete game shutout, allowing no hits through the first seven innings, as Los Altos used a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to beat Cupertino, 2-0. The Eagles improved to 14-1 overall, 7-1 in the SCVAL-De Anza.

Baum allowed three hits in extra innings, but it was the Eagles who came up clutch in the top of the ninth. Aidan Brenner's ground ball to shortstop with one out and the bases loaded allowed Peter Daseking to cross the plate when the double play relay was not in time to end the inning. Baum then helped himself with single to center to score Conner Kendall for a 2-0 lead, though the throw from the outfield nailed Brenner when he tried to score.

Baum allowed a single in the bottom of the ninth, but got a double play to end the game.

Mitty survives late Valley Christian rally

Nick Yorke and Joe Yorke each homered for Mitty, which held off a seventh inning rally to defeat Valley Christian, 6-4.

The Warriors scored three times in the top of the seventh, but it was not enough to come back against the Monarchs. Both Yorke hit two-run homers in the bottom of the first inning, as the Monarchs grabbed early control of the WCAL showdown. Connor Leaverton added an RBI single in the bottom of the second.

Los Gatos blanks Palo Alto

Trevor Allen scattered three hits for the complete game victory, as Los Gatos downed Palo Alto, 3-0.

Allen also had two hits at the plate, while Jack Lewis Miller smacked a solo home run, and Tommy Troy tripled and scored a run.
