Girls Basketball: Look at league champs

February 21, 2016

League play wrapped up on Saturday. As we dive straight into the postseason, here’s a look at who came away as winners in the various leagues.

NCS

BVAL: Heritage (9-1)

Notable: The Patriots downed Pittsburg at home on Tuesday, 62-51, to secure the spot. A Pirates win would have created a tie. Delayney Sparling led five Patriots in double figures, with 14 points. Jordan Sweeney had 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Heritage outscored Pittsburg by nine in the fourth quarter.

DFAL: Miramonte (12-0)

Notable: The Mats will be gearing up for a run at the state title. They are ranked second in the state behind St. Mary’s-Stockton, and fifth nationally.

DVAL: Concord (12-0)

Notable: The Minutemen, 21-5 overall, had only their second winning season since at least 2004-05.

EBAL: Carondelet (14-0)

Notable: The Cougars completed their third straight undefeated mark in the EBAL, their last loss coming to Monte Vista on January 8, 2013.

MCAL: Marin Catholic, San Marin and Tamalpais (12-2)

Notable: Marin Catholic received the top seed in the MCAL postseason tourney.

MVAL: James Logan (12-2)

Notable: The Colts came away with crucial wins against Mission San Jose and Newark Memorial in the final week. Moreau Catholic closed the season with six straight wins to take second place.

NBL: Cardinal Newman (14-0)

Notable: The Cardinals have won 37 straight NBL games, dating back to January 24, 2014, against Santa Rosa.

NCL I: Kelseyville and Middletown (13-1)

Notable: These teams are linked by something far more significant this season, as both were affected by the Valley Fire in October. Middletown was hit particularly hard, and Kelseyville set up an evacuation center.

SCL: Analy and Sonoma Valley (11-1)

TCAL – ROCK: Salesian (10-0)

Notable: For the third straight season, the Pride went undefeated and kept St. Mary’s at bay with an 8-2 mark by beating the Panthers twice. In the TCAL’s debut year of 2012-13, these teams had tied at 9-1.

WACC – FOOTHILL: Bishop O’Dowd (6-0)

WACC – SHORELINE: Castro Valley (10-0)

Notable: Predictions came true for the Trojans, who improved on last year’s high water mark of 9-2 in league and 24-7 overall.

CONGRATS ALSO TO: The Bay School of San Francisco (10-0 in the BCL-Central), College Prep (10-0 in the BCL-East), California School for the Deaf (11-0 in the BCL-General), Arcata (8-0 in the HDNL-Big 5), St. Bernard’s (6-0 in the HDNL-Little 5), Sonoma Academy (13-1 in the NCL II), and Mendocino (12-0 in the NCL III).

LEAGUE POSTSEASONS: Salesian outdistanced St. Mary’s, 72-39. Minyon Moore led the way with 19 points and seven assists, Jordan Hobson added 15 points, and Angel Jackson contributed 10 blocks and four steals. Carolyn Gill paced St. Mary’s with 18.

Tamalpais edged Marin Catholic in the MCAL tourney championship game, 44-43. As reported in the Marin Independent Journal, Megan Lee scored a team-high 14 points and came up with a key steal and rebound in the closing minute for the Red-Tailed Hawks, who won their first ever MCAL title.

Sonoma Valley captured the SCL tourney title game by defeating Analy, 37-31. Jenny Eggers had 14 points and seven boards.

Concord topped Clayton Valley Charter in the DVAL tournament championship at DVC. Jessica Solis paced the starters, who all scored in double digits, with 17. Ciara O’Kelley added 11 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks.

CCS

BVAL – Mount Hamilton: Silver Creek (14-0)

Notable: The Raiders have blitzed competition this year, going 22-2 overall as we head to the postseason.

BVAL – Santa Teresa: Live Oak (13-1)

Notable: The Acorns’ only loss didn’t come to second place Leigh (12-2) but to third place Evergreen Valley (10-4).

BVAL – West Valley: Lincoln (13-1)

MBL: Monte Vista Christian and North Salinas (11-1)

PAL – North: Oceana and South San Francisco (10-2)

PAL – South: Menlo-Atherton (12-0)

Notable: The Bears are a state Top 50 team and were just two games but miles ahead of closest league competitors Hillsdale and Mills.

SCCAL: Scotts Valley (12-0)

Notable: The Falcons enjoyed their third straight undefeated run in the league despite seeing off two stars from last year’s squad to graduation.

SCVAL – De Anza: Los Gatos (11-1)

Notable: After bottoming out with six wins in 2012-13, the Wildcats have now compiled 53 wins since. Last year, however, they were 7-5 in league play, five games behind Palo Alto. Los Gatos finished two games ahead of the Vikings this season.

SCVAL – El Camino: Homestead (12-0)

Notable: The Mustangs have already improved on last year’s overall win total by 10 games. Last year, Cupertino ran the table in this division.

WBAL – Foothill: Pinewood (10-0)

WCAL: Archbishop Mitty (12-0)

Notable: It was to no one’s surprise that the Monarchs cruised through this season, beating second place Sacred Heart Cathedral by 23 and 17, and finishing six games ahead of third place (tie between St. Francis and Valley Christian).

Notable: The Panthers, who haven’t lost a WBAL contest in three years, beat every other team in the league by at least 20 points except for one (17, vs. Sacred Heart Prep).

CONGRATS ALSO TO: Carmel (13-1 in the MTAL), Alisal (10-2 in the MBL-Pacific), and Mercy-SF and Woodside Priory (9-1 in the WBAL-Skyline).

LEAGUE POSTSEASONS: Menlo-Atherton topped Oceana, 60-42, in the PAL tournament. PAL South MVP Greer Hoyem had 23 points for the Bears’ second straight title, as reported by John Reid.

Scotts Valley downed Soquel, 77-49, in the SCCAL tournament finale.
