Humboldt-Del Norte League recognizes top football players

December 19, 2017

There were few surprises when the Humboldt-Del Norte League revealed its all-league awards on Tuesday. Big 5 champion Eureka saw eight athletes honored on the first-team, followed by CIF champion Fortuna with six athletes on the first-team. Little 3 champion St. Bernard's also had eight athletes on the first-team.

Eureka's Sergio Manzo and Fortuna's JB Lewis shared Most Valuable Back honors for the Big 5, while Eureka senior Isaak Gutierrez was named the Most Valuable Lineman.

In the Little 3, St. Bernard's quarterback TJ Campbell and Ferndale running back Wyatt Coppini were named Co-Offensive MVP's, with the Crusaders' Micah Fontenot-Cornely earning Defensive MVP honors.

Next season, the league will split into even-numbered divisions by competitive equity. That places Fortuna, Eureka, St. Bernard's, and Del Norte in the Big 4, with Ferndale, Arcata, McKinleyville, and Hoopa Valley in the Little 4.
