Liberty, Campo capture passing tournament titles

June 17, 2018

After going just 1-2 in pool play at San Jose State on Saturday afternoon, Liberty rallied in the rounds when it mattered most, defeating El Cerrito, De La Salle, and Pittsburg in succession to capture the team 7-on-7 title.

"We know it doesn't mean much, but it was good to get out there and see the guys compete at a high level," said Liberty coach Ryan Partridge. "(Jay) Butterfield really carved it up out there, played really well, and both Josh Dinkins and Jabril White stood out on defense."

Dinkins had four interceptions during the day from his safety position, while White locked down one side from his cornerback position. Offensively, the quartet of Jerrin Easter-Williams, Jordyn Turner, Adrik Lamar, and tight end Peyton Borrelli all had big days, and figure to all be strong complements to the return of Sione Vaki at receiver and Tyerell Sturges-Cofer at running back this season.

Liberty also returns nearly its entire offensive line from last year, but is joined in that category by both Pittsburg and De La Salle. Pittsburg also has a wealth of talent at the skill positions, with quarterback Trey Turner returning from last year's knee injury, which caused him to miss his entire junior season.

Campolindo captures TN tourney title

Campolindo finished Saturday's play with wins over Sacred Heart Cathedral, Burlingame, and Menlo to capture the Terra Nova Tiger Air Passing Tournament. But it wasn't just the wins which pleased the Cougar contingent.

"We fell behind in all our games and had to score on our final drive to win each game," said Campolindo coach Kevin Macy. "All our opponents were well-disciplined and had the kids in the right places. Grant Harper had to thread a lot of needles."

Harper, a rising junior at quarterback who saw playing time last year behind John Torchio, even led the Cougars to an overtime win in the semifinal game, one which was sealed by Justin Bock's interception on the final drive.

Jackson Wheeler made numerous tough catches during the day, and appears to be one of the new faces at receiver for Campolindo, while Max Schoenburger also displayed an ability to get the deep ball. Schoenburger added a pair of interceptions on defense, where Will Windatt also had an interception.

Menlo's strong showing should also be encouraging for Knights' fans, considering they not only have a new head coach, but are also replacing last year's starting quarterback, Emilio Simbeck.
