Tight games and surprises on a busy Friday in the Central Coast

September 29, 2018

“You’re kidding,” said Palo Alto head coach Nelson Gifford after learning on Friday night that Milpitas had upended Los Gatos, 17-7. “No way.”

That stunner in the SCVAL De Anza was certainly the biggest shocker on the night, but it wasn’t the only upset and it was far from the only tight game.

Down in the SCVAL’s El Camino Division, Monta Vista held off Gunn, 39-36, and Saratoga picked up a 48-31 win over Mountain View. Mountain View’s 58-34 win over Gunn last week, combined with tonight’s results, shows that the El Camino Division has more than a few teams that can put up some serious numbers on offense.

Just one WCAL game was played on Friday, with the other three set for Saturday afternoon and evening, and that one contest was closer than expected. An inspired defensive effort kept Sacred Heart Cathedral in the game, but St. Francis, the top-ranked team in the entire CCS, held the Fightin’ Irish under 50 yards for the game in a clinical defensive performance, winning 14-0 at Kezar Stadium.

There were no major surprises in the BVAL’s upper divisions, but Lincoln certainly made a statement. A week after powering past Leland 48-28 with a fierce rushing attack, the Lions got it done on defense with a 21-0 win over Pioneer. In the Santa Teresa Division, Del Mar, Independence and Overfelt all improved to 2-0 in league play and 5-0 overall.

In the West Valley Division, both Prospect and Evergreen Valley moved to 2-0 in league play while the San Jose Bulldogs picked up their first win of the year, 35-21 over Mt. Pleasant.

In the PCAL Mission Division, Monte Vista Christian put up a valiant effort in a 14-0 defeat to Carmel, while Alisal kept pace with the Padres, coming away with a 35-28 victory at Scotts Valley. Julian Renteria threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the victory, while Dorian Segovia ran for a pair.

Arguably the most exciting game in the entire section also went down in the Mission Division over at the Salinas Sports Complex, where Watsonville took down North Salinas 28-21 in two overtimes. A game-winning field goal try for North Salinas at the end of regulation fell short, and the Wildcatz clinched the victory with a fumble recovery in double OT.

Monterey is the team to beat in the PCAL Cypress Division, but King City is no slouch. The Mustang defense stood tall for a second straight week, this time propelling KC to a 14-7 win over St. Francis SCP.
