West Coast Jamboree Roundup: Mitty takes 3rd in Platinum plus more

January 2, 2022

LIVERMORE, Calif. – Archbishop Mitty-San Jose rebounded from its first loss of the season with an impressive 65-52 victory in the West Coast Jamboree Platinum Division third-place game over No. 11 Salesian-Richmond.

Mitty (10-1) came out with a pressure defense from the opening tip-off and trailed only once at 2-0. From there the Monarchs led 10-2 early, 17-13 after one quarter and 37-25 at the half. The lead was 45-36 entering the fourth quarter and from there Mitty pretty much coasted home.

Seattle University-bound Noemi Bariteau led Mitty with 20 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. She hit five three-pointers with two coming in the first quarter when Mitty asserted itself and two in the fourth quarter when the Monarchs shut the door on the Pride. For her efforts, Bariteau was named all-tournament.

Junior Maya Hernandez had a very solid game, adding 18 points, four steals and four rebounds.

Standout sophomore Morgan Cheli had her usual solid outing and finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals and two assists. For her three-game performance, Cheli was named to the all-tournament team.

Salesian (8-3) lost to Mitty for the second time this season after a 63-60 loss two weeks ago in the title game of the Iolani Classic in Hawaii,. The Pride's only other loss was in the Platinum Division semifinals to national No. 2 DeSoto of Texas. The Pride certainly had the toughest draw of any team in the Jamboree’s top division after opening with Cal-Hi Sports No. 4 Centennial-Corona and winning 77-68 in a minor upset.

This time around against Mitty, the Pride just could not get their offense going early on which was evidenced by the fact that with three minutes left in the second quarter they still hadn’t cracked the 20-point mark and faced a 32-17 deficit. They were also out-rebounded 30-21 by Mitty.

Blossoming junior point guard Makiah Asidanya had her third solid Jamboree outing and led Salesian with 14 points and five rebounds. For her performances over the three-game tournament, including a team-high 14 points in the loss to DeSoto and 12 points in the win over Centennial, Asidanya was named to the all-tournament team.

The other all-tournament selection from Salesian was junior point guard Sofia Fidelus. Mitty bottled her up and held her to five points, but Fidelus was a big factor in the Centennial win when she nailed a key three-pointer and finished with 15 points and three three-pointers.

Consolation Championship Platinum Division

The anticipated match-up between Centennial-Corona and Cal-Hi Sports No. 18 Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland did not materialize as O’Dowd had to pull out due to COVID protocols just two hours before tip-off. The Centennial girls, their parents and coaches, were disappointed to have to return to Southern California without getting to play, but everyone understood.

The team showed up in uniform anyway to get the Consolation Championship plaque. Because of the situation, tournament officials decided to award three all-tournament medals to Centennial instead of one as is customary. UCLA-bound Londynn Jones was joined by Loyola-Marymount-committed Layla Curry and junior star Sydni Summers.

Seventh Place Platinum Division

Oakland Tech 75, San Joaquin Memorial-Fresno 62

Oakland Tech led 16-12 after one quarter and 32-30 at the half, but they couldn’t shake off San Joaquin Memorial until Erin Sellers took over with the score tied 40-40 midway through the third quarter. Sellers, who was scoreless in the first half made three straight baskets and a three-pointer to get the lead to 51-42 and the Bulldogs were on their way. Sellers finished with a team-high 18 points with two three-pointers and earned all-tournament honors.

San Joaquin Memorial (6-5) came into the game ranked No. 21 by Cal-Hi Sports but couldn’t duplicate the effort they had in the opening round loss to DeSoto when they gave the Texas girls a tussle. Junior Meadow Roland was chosen all-tournament after finishing with a game high 33 points.

Valley Christian wins Diamond Division

With Carondelet-Concord, the Diamond Division host, and Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland, moving up to the Platinum Division, the Diamond Division was turned into a round robin. Although Valley Christian went 2-1, their 75-58 victory over Bishop Manogue (Reno, Nevada) got them the division’s title based on the round robin rules. Valley Christian lost 56-53 to Moreau Catholic-Hayward, but was a 57-39 winner over a Bishop Alemany-Mission Hills team that lost 54-50 in its game with Alemany.

Morgan State-bound Jael Butler was named the David “Scoop” Jackson Most Valuable Player award winner after finishing with 29 points and 14 rebounds in the Bishop Manogue victory. Butler had double-doubles in all three games after finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the Moreau loss and 15 points and 15 rebounds in the win over Alemany.

The Jim Capoot Memorial Award went to Valley Christian senior Jessi Barry. That honor goes to the girl that exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship and inspirational play Capoot demanded from his players as the head coach of Vallejo. Tragically, Capoot, who had won a 2010 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title, was killed while in the line of duty as a Vallejo police officer a little over a month. before the 2011 Jamboree. Senior Belle Nguyen and junior Olive Batch were named all-tournament.

Other all-tournament selections in the Diamond Division were the junior duo of Dymonique Maxie and Jasmine Beltran of second place Moreau, senior Success Prysock and sophomore Bryanne Lopez-Wood of third place Alemany, and sophomore Jaileen Yarrow of Bishop Manogue.

A special shout out to Bishop Manogue. Of the three Nevada teams in the Jamboree, the Reno team was the only one to make it to California due to the closures of I-80 and Highway 50. They had to go north on Highway 395 and then cut over on roads barely open, and then drop down into Chico as their route to the Jamboree. That route took nine hours, and if that wasn’t enough one of Northern Nevada’s top teams played with only five players.

Emerald Division

Del Oro-Loomis 49, Heritage-Brentwood 40

Del Oro (12-1) got a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds from Sacramento State-bound senior Madison Butcher who took home the David “Scoop” Jackson Most Valuable Player award. Seniors Gabby Kime and Livi Wood were named to the all-tournament team.

For Heritage (10-2) junior star Amanda Muse and senior Gabby Martini were selected as all-tournament.

The Jim Capoot Memorial Award went to Heritage senior Zeni Purge.
