Hession retires as Serra golf coach

Joe HessionBy John Murphy

Joe Hession has retired as the Serra golf coach after serving in that role since 1995, said Serra athletic director Dean Ayoob.

Hession led the Padres to five West Catholic Athletic League golf title and four section championships. His teams also finished second at NorCals in 2001 and 2006 and third at the state championships in 2005 and 2006.

Said former Serra golfer Dan Murphy regarding his time with Hession: “We were the No. 1  seed in the NorCal championship tourney my senior year. We broke a long standing CCS scoring record and won WCAL … before every match we would need to see the ocean as a superstition. So even if we were playing Mitty at a course in San Jose, we would leave Serra a bit early to  over the hill towards HMB to get a glimpse of the water before heading down to San Jose in the team van.

Unfortunately the NorCal tourney was in Merced so that couldn’t happen and we all played terrible.  I think it had more to do with our No. 3 and No. 4 golfers getting kicked off the team two days before the tourney, though.”

Hession’s teams won nearly 80 percent of their matches. He was named the CCS Honor Coach in 2001 and was named the California Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2007.

His former players received scholarships to Stanford, San Jose State, Illinois, UC Davis, Fresno State, Santa Clara and Notre Dame de Namar. Hession teaches English at Serra.

Serra is now seeking a golf coach.
