2014-15 Preppys Nominees
Private School of the Year
SACRED HEART PREP

In recognizing the Private School of the Year, Prep2Prep is not only looking for excellence in one particular sport but sustained success throughout the school year in sports that we actively cover (football, boys/girls basketball, boys/girls soccer, baseball, softball). Furthermore, "degree of difficulty" is taken into account with regard to a school's resources, demographics, etc.

With those conditions in mind, the Preppy for the Private School of the Year for 2014-15 goes to Sacred Heart Prep.

The Sacred Heart Prep football team reached new heights by finishing undefeated and capturing the school's first-ever Open Division championship by defeating CCS powers Oak Grove, Los Gatos and Bellarmine in succession.

“It’s exciting to get an award for all the hard work you put in,” said Ben Burr-Kirven, who was named Prep2Prep Central Coast Section Player of the Year and will play football next year at the University of Washington. “I’m very happy we got this award.”

The boys basketball team finished 14-0 in league play and reached the semifinals of the Open Division playoffs, losing a close one to WCAL champ St. Francis.

“It’s nice to know that all the hard work paid off,” said Corbin Koch, the Sacred Heart Prep basketball standout who was named Prep2Prep CCS Senior of the Year. “The coaches put us in great positions to do a lot of things well.”

“It’s an amazing place to coach at and have my profession,” added SHP basketball coach Tony Martinelli, who was named Prep2Prep CCS Coach of the Year. “We have a lot of great athletes here and it makes my job easy. It’s plenty of motivation to come back and keep coaching.”

In soccer, the boys reached the CCS Division III finals and the girls won the D-III title with little resistance. And the SHP baseball team won the CCS Division III title by defeating perennial power Carmel in the championship game.

The girls basketball team led the charge with a CIF State Division II title, but as usual, success spread throughout the Mitty campus in 2014-15.

The girls soccer team was dominant from start to finish, winning the CCS Division II championship. The boys basketball team fell short of its lofty standards, but still captured a NorCal Division II crown before falling in the state title game.

Finally, the baseball team participated in the Open Division playoffs and the softball team won the CCS Division II title game, handing Pioneer its only defeat of the season. Boys soccer and football also qualified for CCS playoffs

The Bishop O'Dowd boys basketball team got the monkey off its back with a win over Mater Dei in the CIF State Open Division title game, led by Cal-bound five-star recruit Ivan Rabb. The girls basketball team also won a state title - in Division III over Brea Olinda.

While the rest of the sports programs were unable to match the standard set by the basketball teams, the football team did qualify for the NCS playoffs, as did the boys soccer team and softball team.

Obviously the bellweather of the De La Salle sports programs is the football team, which captured an CIF Open Division State title in coach Justin Alumbaugh's second year at the helm. But the rest of the DLS sports teams maintained their high standards as well in 2014-15.

The basketball team - in the final season of USF-bound coach Frank Allocco - finished 27-5 and lost in the CIF Northern California regional semifinals by just four points to Woodcreek-Roseville. The basebal team reached the NCS Division 1 final and the soccer team won the NCS Division 1 title in penalty kicks over San Ramon Valley.

The Marin Catholic football team captured a share of the Marin County Athletic League and lost 27-21 in the NCS Division 3 championship to Campolindo. The boys basketball team also earned a share of the MCAL title and the girls team finished second, a game out of first.

The girls soccer team finished second in the MCAL and qualified for the NCS playoffs while the baseball and softball teams participated in the NCS playoffs.

The St. Mary's girls basketball team had a remarkable season, finishing 34-1 overall and capturing the CIF State Open title with a 76-69 win over Mater Dei. The boys team also had a strong season, finishing 23-9 and reaching the NorCal Regional Semifinals.

The football team went 12-2, losing in the final of the Sac Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. The girls soccer team reached the NCS playoffs. The baseball and softball teams both qualified for the SJS playoffs.
