BRENTWOOD,CA-- Cross-town rivals Heritage and Liberty will meet this Friday for the 10th annual Brentwood Bowl. Liberty finished non-league play with a 3-2 record, but has the advantage of being the epicenter for this exciting matchup. Heritage, meanwhile, was hot throughout non-league play, ending in a perfect 5-0 record, with all five wins by double digits.
Both teams are coming off dominating performances, as Liberty raced past Tracy, 41-14, behind a big performance from quarterback Ryan Dutt, who completed 12 of 16 passes for three scores last week. Heritage, meanwhile, opened 5-0 for the first time in school history with its 56-20 Homecoming win over Berkeley, as quarterback Nick Zell threw for 267 yards and six touchdowns, while running for another 87 yards and a score.
Players to Watch
Heritage: Zell, Aidan Quinn, and the Mack twins.
It's been more than just one performance for Zell, who has thrown for 1,131 yards and a single-season school-record 18 touchdowns in the first five weeks. Quinn is his primary backfield mate, having run for a team-high 272 yards. The Patriots would love to get the ground game going against the Liberty defense.
Twin brothers Tyrese and Tyriq Mack lead the team in receiving with a combined 589 yards and 13 touchdowns, while Tyriq Mack also leads the team in interceptions with three.
Josh Wishom could be another name to watch, after having nine catches at receiver last week. He also returned the game-winning interception for a touchdown against Acalanes.
Liberty: Dutt, Zane Hinojosa, Anthony Gripe
Dutt has thrown for 1,164 yards and nine scores in the first five games. Hinojosa is coming off a career performance, with eight catches for 218 yards against the Bulldogs.
Gripe is the leader on the ground, with 237 yards and a touchdown.
Series History
Heritage has won seven of the first nine meetings between the schools, but Liberty has won two of the past three. Liberty has never beaten the Patriots at Ohmstede Field, however, home of the Lions.
The past two meetings were decided by a total of four points, and the past three games by a total of 11 points. Two years ago, Ezra Magalei's leaping catch in the front corner of the end zone ended Liberty's unbeaten streak to open the season, but last year, Shurod Thompson's two-point conversion late in the game lifted Liberty to the road victory.
