St. Vincent looks to slow down Williams passing attack

September 22, 2018

After running into a red-hot Burton team on the road last week for its first loss of the season, St. Vincent de Paul hosts Williams this Saturday, with the Yellowjackets fresh off a one-sided win over Willows last Friday.

One big key in this game for St. Vincent will be the play of its defensive secondary, led by Marcus Matthias - who has six interceptions this season - and its ability to get a pass rush on Williams quarterback Hunter Povlsen. While AJ Fetter and Gio Antonini will be tasked with pressuring Povlsen, the senior gun-slinger is off to a good start for Williams (2-2) this season, having thrown for 1,018 yards and 10 touchdowns in the first four games, while completing 66 percent of his passes.

Eight different receivers have caught passes for the Yellowjackets this year, with the trio of senior Juan Zamudio and juniors Sam Navarro and Aldo Ambriz leading the way.

After being scoreless in the first half last week, St. Vincent (4-1) looks for a faster start offensively, for both senior quarterback Trent Free and senior running back Daniel Burleson. Free completed less than 50 percent of his passes for the first time all year last week, and Burleson was held below 100 yards for the first time since the season opener.

This is the first meeting between these schools.
