CCS Sophomore of the Year
PATRICK MCDONALD, SERRA

If anyone is still wondering what kind of impact McDonald can make over the next two years, they should remember this year’s ‘Jungle Game’ between Serra and St. Ignatius.

With four seconds left in the game, trailing by two, McDonald took an inbounds pass from Jack Wilson, raced across midcourt, and pulled up two feet in front of the three-point line, letting the ball fly as the buzzer sounded. The shot found its mark, lifting the Padres to a wild 60-59 win over the Wildcats. McDonald finished that game with 15 points, three rebounds, and three blocked shots.

McDonald came up big in other key games as well, leading to a second-team All-WCAL selection. That included a 17-point performance in a huge 62-61 win over St. Francis late in the regular season.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore is a big reason why Serra is already considered a team to watch next season. He will be a part of a veteran team next season, one which returns five starters from this year’s squad which reached the CCS Open Division playoffs and CIF NorCal Division 2 quarterfinals.

Other players considered for this award: Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Emmett Neal, Jr., Alisal’s Josue Gil-Silva, Leigh’s Dylan Johnston, and Leland’s Joseph Chen.

NOTE: We would like to thank our media partners, coaches, parents, players and fans for contributing photos for our all-section features. We salute all of the players that have made this a wonderful season of CCS basketball.
