NCS Senior of the Year
ANTHONY ROY, DUBLIN

Before the calendar had even turned the page into the new year, Dublin senior Anthony Roy had already made an impact on the young boys basketball season.

The 6-foot-5 guard made a splash early in his senior year when he was named the Most Outstanding Player at the prestigious Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament, and his phenomenal season only continued from that point. Roy capped the mid-December tournament with an 18-point performance in a 66-61 win over Salesian, finishing a stretch which included wins over St. Patrick-St. Vincent and Riordan, scoring 42 points combined in those two victories.

“Anthony is a really tough player to guard on the offensive end, as he can score from all levels with tremendous efficiency,” said Dublin coach Tom Costello. “It also doesn’t matter what position he is playing, as he is able to facilitate from anywhere on the floor. His court vision is off the charts.”

For the year, Roy averaged 17.8 points per game, but it was his ability to lead the Gaels to amazing achievements on the court which really elevated his status. Dublin held off Dougherty Valley in an epic EBAL title game, one in which Roy not only scored 21 points but dished out five assists in the process, punctuating his selection as the EBAL Player of the Year. From there, the Gaels made a run all the way to the NCS Open Division title game, with Roy pumping in a team-high 19 points during a semifinal victory over Campolindo.

Roy’s outstanding year, however, was cemented with a 22-point performance during a CIF NorCal Open Division quarterfinal win over Bellarmine, a game in which Roy scored 19 of his points in the second half, including the go-ahead three-pointer.

“All he cared about was team success. He was a great teammate, one who never worried about how many shots he was taking as long as the team was successful,” Costello said. “He definitely could have dominated the ball, taken more shots and scored more points, but he was smart and mature enough to know that our team would not have been as successful.”

Following his senior season, Roy gave his commitment to the University of San Francisco, a program which has utilized local talent to great success in recent years. The Dons will get a player who was able to either lead his team in scoring, or dish out a team-high six assists, like he did in the NCS Open Division final against Bishop O’Dowd. Roy also averaged over five rebounds per game, showing his versatility in all aspects of the game.

“Ant has an innate ability to slow the game down and make the right play. He doesn’t force or rush things,” Costello added. “Of course, he made some huge plays throughout the season. He knocked down key shots, blocked shots, pulled down key rebounds and made the extra pass to teammates. In short, he did whatever was needed for us to succeed.”

For his efforts this past season, we are pleased to recognize Dublin’s Anthony Roy as the Prep2Prep North Coast Section Senior of the Year.

Other players considered for this award include San Leandro’s Ciri Sawyers, San Ramon Valley’s Sebastien Scott, James Logan’s Brah’jon Thompson and Salesian’s Te’Jon Sawyer.
