The Southern Section playoffs are upon us. Here at Prep2Prep we will keep you posted as to the results in the most powerful divisions in the Southern Section.
PAC-5 DIVISION
It was the second time Orange-Lutheran played Corona Centennial this season and for the second time the Lancers came away with the same result.
Centennial cruised to a 49-17 victory behind JJ Taylor’s 138 yards rushing and three touchdowns. The No. 1 seed Huskies are heading to the Pac-5 semifinals where they will play Mater Dei. Mater
Dei needed a two-point conversation to narrowly defeat Serra 28-27.
Not to be outdone, St. John Bosco blew out Loyola 52-14. This was the Braves’ 11th running clock victory.
St. John Bosco was led by quarterback Quentin Davis who threw for 355 yards and five touchdowns, and running back Sean McGrew’s 238 rushing yards and two scores.
The Braves will face Bishop Amat next week in the semifinals. Bishop Amat relied on star running back Torreahno Sweet to beat Oaks Christian. The senior running back ran all over Oaks
Christian for 371 yards and three touchdowns. Oaks Christian wide receiver Michael Pittman put up a spectacular performance in the loss. Pittman caught 18 passes for 386 yards and five touchdowns.
WEST VALLEY DIVISION
Mission Viejo trailed for a good portion of their matchup against Murrieta Valley before pulling away in the second half. The undefeated Diablos went into halftime trailing, but their
running game became effective in the second half and sparked them to a 42-21 win.
Colin Schooler ignited Mission Viejo’s second-half rally with three touchdowns. He also had 125 rushing yards on the night.
Mission Viejo will travel to Chino Hills for the semifinals. The Chino Hills Huskies edged out Valencia 16-14 on Friday night.
Rancho Cucamonga stunned Tesoro 53-28. Tesoro was the favorites heading into the game but it didn’t look like it on Friday night. Aaron Manning had three touchdowns in the victory.
The Cougars will play Vista Murrieta next week. The No. 2 seed Broncos held on and beat Upland 21-14 to advance to the semifinals.
SOUTHWEST DIVISION
No. 1 seed La Habra had an easy time with Laguna Hills to advance to the semifinals. The Highlanders routed Laguna Hills 42-14. Quarterback Eric Barriere accounted for 347 yards and four
touchdowns and his teammate, running back CJ Taylor, rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns.
La Habra will face Villa Park, which beat Valencia 28-15.
No. 2 seed San Clemente survived a scare in its quarterfinal matchup. The Tritons were a heavy favorite versus Sonora but only managed to win by seven points in a 52-45 shootout. San Clemente
will have to tighten up their defense if they expect to meet La Habra in the finals - like we all expect them to.
San Clemente will play Buena Park in the semifinals next week. Buena Park scored at least seven points every quarter to beat Corona del Mar 35-17.
NORTHERN DIVISION
Camarillo made it look easy in the quarterfinals, winning 38-7 over St. Joseph. But the victory was overshadowed by the ejection of quarterback Jake Constantine for two unsportsmanlike penalties.
If a player is ejected it is automatically followed by a one-game suspension, according to CIF rules.
Camarillo, which is undefeated for the first time in school history, will likely play its semifinal matchup against Bishop Diego without Constantine.
"We're going to appeal it and see what happens," Camarillo head coach Jack Willard told the Ventura County Star.
Constantine declined to comment after the game.
The quarterback’s absence could prove to be big in next week’s game versus undefeated Bishop Diego. The Cardinals easily beat previously undefeated Palmdale 48-6 to advance.
Thousand Oaks advanced in a hard-fought game against Lompoc.
The Lancers relied on quarterback Max Gilliam and running back Perry Martin III to beat the Braves 34-31. The two combined for five touchdowns. But it was Martin who was the key. The running
back had 267 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the night. Thousand Oaks will play No. 2 seed Arroyo Grande next week.
Arroyo Grande made sure its game was over fast. The Eagles led 28-0 at halftime and end up beating Antelope Valley 41-0 to advance to the semifinals. Bradley Mickey had 146 yards rushing
and three touchdowns on the night.
