NCS Sophomore of the Year
JORDYN YOUNG, CARONDELET
No team on Carondelet’s schedule this season was immune to the scoring ability of sophomore Jordyn Young.
That included EBAL stalwarts Monte Vista, Livermore and San Ramon Valley, plus defensive-minded teams such as Berkeley and Florida 4A regional semifinalist St. Thomas Aquinas. In fact, the speedy and talented Young was seemingly the only player with a consistent answer for Monte Vista’s well-renowned defense, a unit which allowed more than one goal twice all season, but saw Young notch three goals against the Mustangs.
As the season progressed, all opponents were aware of Young’s ability to find the back of the net, yet she scored in the NCS Division I championship victory over San Ramon Valley, and then added another in a regional quarterfinal win over Clovis North. The late success followed a season-long trend, one that included a pair of goals against STA in the National Elite Prep Showcase.
Arguably most impressive was Young’s ability to come up big against the Cougars’ best opponents. Her lone goal in the first meeting against Monte Vista led to a draw between the two sectional and regional powerhouses. In the second meeting, she scored both goals in a 3-2 loss. And she iced the game with a final goal in the section championships against San Ramon Valley, winning a one-on-one encounter with the Wolves’ keeper.
“I knew I was open and knew I could beat the keeper,” Young told Prep2Prep’s Jesus Cano after that big win. “We got to send our seniors off with something they’ve worked on for four years. We enjoyed the moment with them.”
Young’s focus on what her success did for her teammates only adds to her qualities on and off the field, and makes it clear that she will be a team leader on the Concord campus for the next couple seasons.
For her efforts throughout the year, we are pleased to recognize Jordyn Young as the Prep2Prep North Coast Section Sophomore of the Year.
Other players considered include Northgate’s Natalie LaRue, Livermore’s Alivia Krummen-Ganz, Miramonte’s Angelina Basso and James Logan’s Leslie Murillo.
