The Live Oak girls soccer team ended its three-game losing streak, defeating Branham 1-0 on Tuesday in a Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division match.
“This was a big win for us,” Live Oak coach Anthony Vasquez said. “We were on a three-game losing streak, so to finally get a win feels really good."
With many injuries and fouls, both teams had their obstacles.
“Our team is not at full strength. We had injury and sickness so we didn’t have all our players here,” said Branham coach Ron Smare. “During the flow of the game we also had three players come out because of injuries, two of which seem to be severe. We are a pretty battered-up group. But all of that considering, they gave everything they had and played as well as they possibly could. I was really proud of them.”
In the 19th minute Live Oak senior and captain Macey Dunne made a goal off of a throw-in and subsequent rebound.
“It went past everybody and I was back at the far post and I shot,” said Dunne. “It hit off a girl and then I got the rebound in. We had a couple of tough losses the last few games, so we needed this one really bad. I think everyone’s head was in the game today and I think we did well having really strong moments.”
Branham (9-7-2, 7-4-1) concluded the week with a 1-0 victory against Fremont, while Live Oak (5-7-1, 5-4-1) tied Leigh 0-0. Both teams are currently projected to be in the 39-team field for the Central Coast Section playoffs.
