Saturday morning Scotts Valley took home a 10-5 baseball victory win against host Live Oak.
The Falcons and Acorns were tied for the majority of the game. It wasn’t until the seventh inning that Scotts Valley took control.
“We did really great on defense,” said center fielder/pitcher Riley Hilton of Scotts Valley. “We stopped a lot of balls back there at catcher and caught everything in the outfield.”
Live Oak scored three first-inning runs. Scotts Valley responded immediately with three of their own in the second. With one out and the bases loaded, Ryan Frizelle knocked in two runs with a hit. Then, Matt Becker scored on a Sean Varenkamp groundout to tie the game 3-3.
In the third, Live Oak went ahead 4-3 on Justin Sanders' squeeze bunt.
Scotts Valley controlled both the fifth and sixth to tie the game 5-5. Garrett Johnston hit in Jake Lobo in the fifth, and Varenkamp hit in Matt Becker in the sixth.
“You make one error and it changes the whole game,” said Live Oak outfielder Tomasso Monteanni.
Scotts Valley then won it in the seventh. After a pitching change was made for Live Oak, Scotts Valley started flashing the metal.
“I think the key thing was that we had quality at-bats. We made the pitcher work, we saw a number of pitches, and when the pitch was made, we were looking for certain things,” said Scotts Valley coach Rick Erlin. “We executed the play; that’s what allowed us to score runs. We caught a couple breaks and had some quality at-bats; we just kept working it.”
With one out, Brenny Hillan scored on a Live Oak error, opening the door for a big Scotts Valley inning.
“We gave them free base-runners. We made some costly mistakes; it’s hard to come back from that,” said Live Oak coach C.J. Goularte. “It’s hard enough to get 21 outs in a baseball game, let alone make some mistakes where you have to end up getting more. We gave them a shot there because we weren’t able to play catch. That really was the difference in that inning. Those mistakes come back to haunt you.”
Live Oak (2-6) hosts Del Mar Tuesday, while Scotts Valley (4-2) visits Soquel.
