Late touchdown lifts Westmont to league title

November 4, 2016

SAN JOSE - With 34 seconds left in the game, Westmont receiver Nolan Berry caught a red zone pass from Johnnie Phillips, as the Warriors (9-1, 7-0) capped an 80-yard drive and claimed a 17-13 victory over the Branham Bruins (6-4, 5-2).

That was enough for Westmont to win the game, and clinch the BVAL-Santa Teresa league title with an undefeated league record.

“That final play: I knew my receivers would run their routes, and I knew the boys up front would block. Nolan Berry made a great catch.” said Phillips.

Just before Westmont’s final drive, Branham, at that time in a four-point deficit, scored its first and only touchdown of the game, as Tanner Scattini found a wide open Nick Majors for a 32-yard connection to give the Bruins a late lead.

“We knew we needed to get to the end zone and we executed,” said Scattini.

But, Westmont’s final touchdown led to a series of failed desperation passes from Branham, the final one being a pick by Jose Lacayo.

“It was a battle between two good teams, and we came out on the short end,” said Scattini.

Branham started well in the game, advancing to the red zone on their first drive, as Tyler Pesavento kicked a chip shot field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Soon after, Warriors were able to block a punt deep in Branham territory. Phillips converted shortly thereafter, with a 12-yard run up the middle to score the first touchdown of the game and take a 7-3 lead in the second quarter.

Pesavento and Westmont kicker Cameron Rottler exchanged field goals to set up the exciting final minute sequence, and ultimately, a Westmont victory.

“Even though we lost, I’m still happy with everyone of my teammates. We all pushed our hardest until the last second,” commented Branham lineman Gabe Schell.

“Everybody contributed, it was great game. I’m just happy we came out with a win. Westmont Warriors, we’re going to CCS!” said an excited Phillips.
