Duran's clutch shot lifts Kennedy-Richmond

November 30, 2016

PITTSBURG,CA--- Kennedy-Richmond's Geovanny Duran scored on a beautiful shot in the 78th minute to give the Eagles a 2-1 victory over Berean Christian in the opening game of the Winter Soccer Classic.

With the game nearing its end, Duran played the ball down the length of the field. Then the unexpected happened, as Duran’s shot from 25 yards out at an angle bounced off the post and into the back of the net. The Kennedy bench went absolute bonkers, as the goal gave them the victory.

“I observed the goalkeeper’s position prior to my kick,” stated Duran. “I didn't think the ball was going in, but I'm glad it did because we took home the victory.”

The game was a back and forth battle between the two teams. However, Kennedy struck first, 15 minutes into the game, when Carlos Chicas scored as he broke away and blasted the ball past the Berean goalkeeper.

“An early goal was great to begin with,” said Kennedy head coach Harry Campbell. “But after that it was a back and forth game.”

Berean answered back four minutes later, when freshman Kyle Antonson crossed it over to Caleb Onofrei, who headed it over the Kennedy keeper.

There were plenty of opportunities in the game. Kennedy’s Adanay Demisse crossed over to Duran, but was just over his head. It appeared that Kennedy was going to break up the tie earlier as Marco Gamez got his head on the ball but Berean defender Julian Hodis cleared the ball out.

Kennedy will play Miramonte in the next game of the WSC at Granada High School on December 3rd. Berean will travel to face Piedmont on December 1st at 7 PM.
