Grizzlies capture Cali Classic behind Spiller's lights-out performance

December 10, 2016

SAN RAMON, Calif. -- California defeated visiting Mountain House 82-50 on Friday night in the championship round of the California Classic.

Early in the first quarter, senior forward Luke Spiller came out firing on all cylinders for Cal. The 6-foot-7 senior went on to grab 11 boards en route to his first double-double of the season.

“It felt great to be able to go up and control the boards tonight," he said.

While the rest of the Grizzlies started out slow, missing on their first 7 three-point attempts, Spiller managed to keep his team in game.

Cal saw itself down early, trailing by five to start the second. However this wouldn’t last for long as the Grizzlies went on a 15-4 run, sparked by Spiller's four consecutive threes, which would in turn ignite the Grizzlies' offense. Just seconds after the fourth Spiller three, senior guard Torian Parmalee got in on the action by dropping in 6 of his 17 points in a matter of seconds.

Mountain House was quick to answer back as Simrat Brar got to the hoop at will, keeping his team within eight. Brar was assisted by senior center Cameron Palmer, who was a menace on the boards. Palmer accounted for 16 points on the night and grabbed eight boards.

As Mountain House began to crawl back late in the second, senior forward Luke Hasse drained two of his seven three-pointers to push the Grizzlies' lead to 15 points before the half

The second half was all California, as the Grizzlies quickly put the game away behind Luke Hasses’s 21 point performance, 15 of which came in the second half on 5 consecutive three-pointers. The Mustangs just couldn’t seem to get anything going as they shot under 35 percent from the field.
