HUGHSON,CA - Hughson stormed past Gustine in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI girls soccer playoffs on Wednesday, taking the game by a score of 6-1.
The first half brought a pair of goals for Hughson, as Morgan Ehlers would put in both those coming in the first 15 minutes of the half, while Haley Pires would put the lone goal in for Gustine with less than five minutes in the half, ending the first half with Hughson up 2-1.
¨I was glad to get in a goal for my team," Pires said. "I was disappointed we weren't able to get past Hughson, but it just means we will have to work stronger during our offseason.¨
Hughson would expand their lead in the second half, putting in a total of four goals, as Ehlers would put in two in the first 10 minutes of the half. Yaneli Lopez scored another in the 56th minute and Ashlee Coder scored the last goal of the game, in the 68th minute, as Hughson would win and advance to the section semifinals.
¨It felt good to get those four goals in, but we have a lot of work to do coming into the semifinals.¨ Ehlers said.
¨Proud that my girls were able to pull away with the victory today," said Hughson coach Mark Morphy. "We got a tough game next as we play Summerville, so we plan to work hard and get back to playing on Friday.¨
Hughson will be headed to the semifinals as they face Summerville on Friday at 3:00 pm.
