Torrey Pines overpowers Sage Creek with early lead

March 29, 2017

Quickly getting three outs at the top of the first inning, the Falcons stepped up to bat. Three outs and two rounds through their batting lineup later, the scoreboard showed a confident and comfortable 11-0 lead.

Torrey Pines went on to crush Sage Creek 17-0, ending the game quickly after the fifth inning and taking a victory in their first league game of the season.

A triple hit into centerfield from Cassie Kaelber following Stavi Augur’s single initially put the Falcons on the board. Makena Macias smashed a ball deep into the outfield which, although caught in the air near the fence, brought Kaelber home for an RBI. The Falcons then continued hitting consistently and loading the bases, racking up the runs with some help from walks by the Sage Creek pitcher.

“We have the goal of trying to score a bunch in the very beginning,” center fielder Ally Harvey said. “We’ve been hitting really well, so we wanted to keep that going through this game too.”

In the second inning, two walks and a fly ball into right field from Augur loaded the bases for Torrey Pines. A third walk upped the score to 12-0, and Alex Reges hit a line drive down the center of the diamond to bring Augur home. Another walk and a hard shot into left-center field by Harvey gave the Falcons a 15-point lead.

“We just hit well and defended well,” head coach Jonathan Moore said. “We just hit the ball where they weren’t, and their pitching was not very overpowering.”

Sage Creek’s Alyssa Sheldone started the third inning off with a double to left field, but her teammates were unable to bring her home. The Falcons scored two more runs in the third and fourth innings for the final score of 17-0. They forced multiple ground balls and outs to end the game quickly after the top of the fifth.

According to Moore, the game against Sage Creek allowed them to substitute in players to get more fielding and batting time. He and Harvey both said that Falcons will be working on hitting and defense for their next big game against Carlsbad.

“We have a big practice tomorrow; we’re going to do lots of hitting because [Carlsbad’s] probably one of our biggest competitors in this league,” Harvey said.

Torrey Pines faces Carlsbad on Thursday at 3:30 p.m., and Sage Creek will play Morse tomorrow at 4 p.m.
